In episode 85 David interviews guest Aaron Flores, a Body Trust® Certified dietitian based in California, about how body trust can help you break free from diet culture. During their conversation, David and Aaron connect on similarities in their journey to becoming dietitians. They discuss topics like what it is like transitioning from a weight-centric approach to a weight-inclusive one, Health At Every Size®, Intuitive Eating, Body Trust®, what sparked their career change, the nuances of masculinity as a form of oppression, the lack of diversity in the non-diet approach, and much more!
Aaron shares with us a little about what it was like growing up in Los Angeles as a white-passing, American-Jewish Mexican immigrant. He tells us about his experience with paradigm straddling when he first started to learn about intuitive eating and HAES® while working in the weight loss sector of the VA. David and Aaron reflect on the potential and unintentional harm either may have caused while they transitioned to a weight-inclusive approach to health. They highlight the unlearning each had to do and agree that their current approach makes their careers much more meaningful and fulfilling, getting to see their clients grow and learn more about themselves. As the conversation continues Aaron talks about the importance of tapping into or reconnecting with the body, there is wisdom in our coping!
